The Wyckidde Wytcche of ye West never said ‘Fly my pretties, Fly’ - she merely said (‘now Fly ! Fly!! FLY !!!’) but she DID say (‘And now, my Beauties, something with POISON in it I think-with POISON IN IT - ah, POPPIES !! POPPIES !! Poppies will put them to sleep !’ ) LoL

I felt so bad for Jayne Marie when she said her aunt told her about the death by showing her a newspaper headline saying her mother had been decapitated. What a horrible and cruel way to tell her.. Her aunt didn't even have the grace to tell her in a more gentle way and you can tell it still bothered her in this interview.

In the film the conclusion and revelation of this scene took me completely by surprise actually... but in the film version the loveliness of it *appears to be* so sincere(?) that I took it as meaning that the intentions and politics of Emcee were vague and obfuscated by himself in a major way. Throughout the whole film it feels very ambivalent wether he is a good bad guy or a bad good guy so to speak... and ofcourse nowadays the general consensus would definetely be that it "doesn't really matter" because he would be considered problematic either way and any other way aswell. But forever guessing at what really was in his heart all along was really part of the many, many aspects that made the film so excellent aswell. I felt like in a way he truly meant the pleas of compassion, understanding and non-discrimination as a fellow progressively liberal theatre guy from the Weimar-era and the speech mid-song could even be felt to be as powerful as Zola's "J'accuse!" but in a way that speaks more to matters of the heart. Then the joke would be that the nazis in the audience don't understand that the joke is actually on them as they are laughing at easy, racist gags like the monkey suit whilst plenty of warm-hearted people with emotional intelligence have a deeper understanding because we understand that it shouldn't matter what someone looks like or what race or ethnicity they happen to be because love is love is love is love and indeed: "Leben und Leben lassen"! Still he would be pandering to said nazis then anyway ofcourse - which would be an issue and problematic in itself aswell ofcourse, especially given the times and the inevitable course of history to come which we now all now and should all be absolutely appalled by (yet still probably the economically smart and maybe even necessary thing to do if he wanted to save his theatrical, little company and the opportunity for them all to publically practice and perform their arts and make at least a little bit of a living out of it hopefully) - but in such a way that it is completely ironic because (unbeknownst to them and their small, short-sighted minds) he would actually secretely be making a mockery out of them and how ugly théy and only them are with all of their stupidity, superficiality, prejudice, obscene pomposity and especially their hideously ugly racism and bigotry. He would then be intelligently mocking them to their very faces with them laughing about it heartedly and stupidly but blissfully unaware by mirroring their own ugliness in what entertains and excites them directly back to them by embodying it in his own persona as a hidden layer of satire. In that case the jolting and haunting line at the very end really _would_ *have* to be whispered so that the self-complacent and wooden-headed wouldn't actually pick up on it and his true intentions because they'd be so busy laughing at dumb and racist stuff that they'd completely miss it. But on the other hand it is actually entirely possible that he really is completely in bed with the ugly and evil nazis himself and is therefor only putting in the work to completely underline their warped, twisted and anti-humanitarian ideologies and beliefs and only pat them on the backs for it without as much as a speck of irony or hidden satire at their expense instead of the expense of Jewish people... a very eerie, uncomfortable and worrisome enigma to be unsure of indeed! And exactly therein for me lies the genius of this scene in the film version at least.
